Intro
I have played 4 games of Dreamblade now (3 against my girlfriend and 1 against Daemonkain) and I have concluded that it is pretty awesome. While the dice can sometimes be a big factor, I think a well planned strategy and calculating ahead of time can overcome the dice in many cases and we will see the same players finishing "in the money" at multiple tournaments.
Army Construction
Daemonkin played the same army out of the rulebook, while I took a bit of time to throw something different together. My army was:
x3 Hiveling 3F
x1 Runetagged Brawler 3V
x2 Inspired Samurai 4V
x1 Twilight Scout 5V
x1 Knight of Tomorrow 5V
x3 Horrid Pultregeist 6FF
x1 Savannah Dreamhunter7V
x3 Fleshless Reaper 8F
x1 Loyal Scragglemaw 9V
I think if I built the army again I'd play 1 less Fleshless Reaper and 1 Zungaar Bodyguard, I found that bodyguard pieces were really important to protect my fragile fear pieces.
The idea of the army was to swarm to win the first few rounds with Hivelings and Bodyguard pieces and then hold my positions with Fleshless Reapers.
[A note about Fleshless Reapers... this piece (ambush 6) is AWESOME placing one in the center of the board makes it almost impossible for your opponent to get to where he or she needs to go and late in the game if you can clear out a 4 or 5 scoring cell it makes it very hard for you to be disrupted, especially by crappy fodder pieces like spellbound scissors or runetagged brawlers.]
If something went wrong I also had the backup plan of using Horrid Pultregeists to "force" pieces onto my Fleshless Reaper deathtraps.
The Game
We rolled for init and got the number 6 total. Six is a pretty awful number for my army because I can't spawn two pieces and get an early advantage. So we both spawned Twighlgiht Scouts. I probably for the same reasons as him opted for the scout over the Knight of Tommorrow because its early in the game and he will probably die before too many blades are rolled, plus Advance is better than Skirmish because pieces still have to get into the battle in the first place.
We both moved to the diagonal from our starting square and passed the turn.
(Tie)
Second round a 1 was rolled (by me) so no spawn and Daemon had the "pleasure" of going first. He moved his piece to the 3 score tile (the only way he could win the round) and I moved mine to my 3 score tile.
(Tie)
Round 3 ALSO resulted in a 1, this time he rolled it so no spawn. I moved my piece to the 5 score like I had to and he opted to move his twilight scout onto the same square as mine. To contest it.
(Tie)
Round 4 we actually got to spawn things, so I spawned some Hivelings in the row that my scout was in and he spawned a single piece I don't remember... Savannah Dreamhunter maybe? I had won init so I shifted my Hivelings forward one space and attacked. I got really lucky and disrupted his Scout and when he shifted and attacked he did not disrupt my scout.
(Tie)
Round 5 We spawned again, this time I brought a Fleshless Reaper out. I was able to manuever my pieces in such a way where there was no way he could stop me from scoring more points than him even though he killed my Twilight Scout.
(1-0)
Rounds 6-10
I lost initiative all these rounds causing my early positional advantage to fall away even though I had my Fleshless Reaper in the center. I became very low on pieces because in rounds 7-10 no spawn occured.
(2-2)
Round 11-17
I was able to bring out my Horrid Pultregiests and threw his pieces onto my Fleshless Reaper causing many of them to die. I was able to recover pretty quickly once I was able to spend my extra spawn points and was able to get my fleshless reaper on the far scoring row making it VERY hard for him to contest the cell or kick it out. This resulted in a quick victory for me.
(6-3)
Conclusion
Besides having a lot of fun, I've learned that Ambush is an amazing ability when combined with other abilities that allow you to move your opponent's pieces into the ambush cells. Daemonkain was a great opponent and it was a really fun game. I highly suggest you all try it.
