Not unexpected at all at this point. Still, it's sad news.

Hopefully we can keep some local tournaments going.

I'm sure if they did something as simple as sticking to the round bases to keep them in size with DDM and SWM they would have had much better sales. That was a major reason I never bought any Dreamblade. I thought they looked cool and I would have used them for my D&D game if they had the same bases as my DDMs.

I will buy your unwanted D&D WotC minis collection (DDM only). Email me your asking price!

Dreamblade was doomed from the get-go. The minis only targeted a single market--minis gamers. No real collector's value (not portable like cards, not high-quality enough to serve as display pieces) and no real RPG value (wrong-sized bases; mostly inappropriate scale).

Pity that it died so fast, however, since it does have an amazing rules/gameplay structure.

No suprise for me.  This is the second big dud in aq row for them isn't it.  I seem to recall a pretty neat cardgame that had realy annoyingly unplayable card shapes.   I likely would have bought more Dreamblade minis if A) the size was comparable to DDM and SWM, B) Circular bases and C) Figures that were slightly less weird.  I've got some Abberations, Demons and Constructs out of the game, just not much else.  Pity too, some of the more human figures would have made excellent PCs.

The tournament structure was done great as well. Not losing points for losing matches encourages new players with inferior collections to play. Even if you lose all your games you still gain some points in the standings.

You can play a theme or for fun warband and not have it cost you in the standings.

I concurr with the fact that it ended for Dreamblade far too quickly. It might be a good time for people who were sitting on the fence about trying the game to get in on the cheap before they all disappear, though.

Saw it coming about three minutes after the game was released. The reason DDM is successful, I believe, is due to its crossover appeal. Skirmishers buy it and RPGers buy it. Dreamblade never had that.

I too was very skeptical about the business model when it first appeared. DDM had not only Skirmishers, and RPGer but also Collectors involved in the mix. And do not discount the numerous serious Dragon fiends who would collect anything Dragon.

Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project....

It can be collected, but it does not have the appeal that most collectable things have.  DDM is driven by several factors.

1. RPG - DM's want monsters, players want figures for their characters
2. skirmish - skirmishers want the best figs for skirmish
3. dragon collectors - a lot of people find dragons attractive even though they may have no interest in D&D
4. a large and loyal following - many people have been playing D&D for decades
5. value - because of the above reasons, DDM will maintain a decent value over time; people are more attracted to collecting things of value

if the mins had more rpg usefulness then i would have gotten more singles. Most of the figures was just so bizarre looking that they had no use for any type of rpg system. hopefully it gets a better replacement. My hope is Gi Joe

Yah, sometimes I browse the forums at lunch to check out the news and trends.  Still mass collecting and picking up 3+ cases each release and still dogging EBAY for good deals (thou not quite as compulsively as I once did).  I do a lot more reading than posting now, since most of the time by the time I get around to the thread, all the points have been made and no need to post just to post.

DDO is sucking a huge amount of my "play time' these days, and has for the past 18 months and likely will for the foreseeable future.

By that logic, I'm 23 (not the 30 my birth certificate keeps telling me).

Ha, I had a girl at the restaurant the other day come up to me to ask if I had a girlfriend. I was eating out with the guys. I promptly replied "No, I don't have a girlfriend, my wife won't let me."

I'll have to second the idea of both lack of crossover appeal, and sizing issues. Cost was an effect too, as it failed to really draw over Magic Players.

Cost certainly was an issue, but lemme tell you, at about $30-35 a case on EBay shipped, it flys out the door..;-) Amazing what 1/5 list price will do..hehe.

It was inevitable. I think most Dreamblade players were also consumers of DDM and SWM. And, really, there comes a point where you realize, "Holy crapweasel! I'm spending way too much money on these things." And then you have to choose your priorities. As previously mentioned, DDM has more overall appeal, between skirmishing and RPG - plus general collecting. And SWM has the whole movie and novel franchise behind it, so there's the whole history and nostalgia factors and previously existing immersion in that universe. Dreamblade, on the other hand, was something conjured out of nothing, a free floating universe devoid of history and a previously established fanbase. Factor in the funky bases that makes crossover usage unwieldly, and it was a given the line would fail. The saddest part is that WotC should have seen this coming before they ever went into development, in which case all those resources could have been applied to the already successful lines of DDM and SWM.

[Sarcasm on] You mean WotC doesn't do solid research about the marketing and probability of success for their games before spending a LOT of money to develop and promote them?  Say it isn't so! [Sarcasm off]

Funny you should mention that. At GenCon 2006, I mentioned to a senior WotC exec that I didn't think Dreamblade would make it long term, and that resources would have been better spent developing their successful products even further. He kind of shrugged (giving me body language that he quietly agreed), and gave me the canned answer of "Well, we always have to try new things."

Here's the thing. Every game company is looking for the new hotness. It was D&D. Then GURPS. Then magic. Than Pokemon. Problem is, it's not that easy to predict. Popularity testing? Right. So, they run new things up the flag pole, and see who salutes.
