| If you're using a miniature in an RPG or as a piece for a boardgame, it doesn't matter a whole lot what its original stats were -- At that point, you're only concerned with how the mini looks on the table.
So... What sorts of mini reuses have people here come up with? Some reuses are pretty obvious (halfling mini -> RPG child), but for others I might have a miniature on hand for months or years before it occurs to me that it has a good alternative purpose. For example, here's a thread with the Heroclix figure called "The Question": http://www.vicsage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=7732
The human figure immediately struck me as good for noir purposes (after adding some details on the head). But I didn't think about uses for the pillar until just a week back. Cut off the question mark, and it's good as a brick/stone pillar in pretty much any situation. Or keep the question mark but cut the pillar three bricks down from the top, and you've got a really nice looking "mysterious thingy" marker for use in a variety of games.
For that matter -- Is there a good forum or database up on the net for seeing other people's creative uses for their miniatures? It would be fantastic if there were a prepainted minis wiki where people could contribute pictures, comments, tags and such on all the various lines of miniatures.

| Well I make a fair amount of use out of my old Heroclix and Mageknight figures. Most of the games I run tend to be Pulp Adventure and Horror. I'm working on modding the Question right now actually.

| Edit -- &*%@& board ate my whole post beyond the first paragraph, so I've rewritten the rest.
I
agree -- There's lots of good stuff (and lots of less good stuff) to
choose from in Star Wars, Mage Knight, and HeroClix. HorrorClix,
Dreamblade, and even the odd piece from CreepyFreaks or Axis &
Allies can be good at times. There are others I haven't looked at much,
though -- The Lord of the Rings stuff, MechWarrior, Pokemon, and no
doubt some I haven't heard of. And there are more lines coming out to
keep an eye on -- Dr. Who, World of Warcraft, Mutant Chronicles,
Monsterpocalypse. And there are also the non-random prepainted
miniatures from McFarlane, Safari, Schleich, etc.
My own uses are pretty varied. Mostly I use them for board games
(Dungeoneer, Dungeon Twister, Talisman, Heroes Incorporated, Arkham
Horror, Evo, Goldland, etc.), but also sometimes for RPGs (fantasy,
pulp/horror, and modern). So there are lots of different possible
applications I try to look for in a miniature.

I haven't doctored it, yet. For that matter, I'm not an especially good painter -- That's part of why I like the prepainted minatures! We'll see just where those eyes end up. ;)

Oh lord, there have been so many I'm not sure I can remember specific examples. Biggest alt use has probably been proxying for minis that we had no actual counterpart. | I ended up using Black Canary's head as a replacement for the Question. His figure is a bit on the smaller side, so her head was a good fit. Now I just need to prime the figure and paint it.

| Hello Everyone,
This is more in line with Ghendar's post, but I use the Fiendish Tyranosaur for more Huge minis than any other. I recently used one as a Dire Tiger enlarged to Huge Size. I had the Dire Tiger fig, and kept it out for the looks, but needed the fig with a huge base for game play. The Fiendish Tyranosaur is definitely my champion of proxies.

| For Serpent folk I tend to use the Ophidian from Death Knell. It works particularly well as a degenerate breed aka worms of the earth.

I as well use this, although I usually remove the weapon if I do.
