OK, so now I'm confused. Based on the preview preview, I thought Hull and Defense were the same thing. They're not?
And the ships look... not good.

You might want to check our the thread over at WOTC, there is another pic of the Shuttle, TIE Int, Falcon, and the regular Star Destroyer...

May you find peace and happiness at the hand of Hextor.

The game comes out next month - shouldn't the first preview have been a month or two ago?

The ships look ok. Not incredible though.

This preview was not interesting at all. How are we supposed to get hyped by ships we know having so very little differences and bland paint jobs?

...and I'm the kind of guy who gets easily hyped...

The scale being a bit off is something we've known for ages, but now I see the star destoryer next to the millenium flacon, I believe it's way too much. I'll wait for more pics and also to see the things in their actual plastic blandness before falling for anything. When I think I almost pre-ordered three cases of this, I'm happy I could wait to see some previews first...

Cheers
Al.

What bothers me is the size of the ships in relation to their own bases. If these are gargantuan ships, and we assume the base is 4" like other gargantuans, then the ships themselves appear to be only 6" or 7" long. I was hoping ships this size would have the same kind of heft to them as the Gargantuan Black Dragon from DDM. The leaked pic has the same issues. The regular Star Destroyer could have been about the size of the Desert Skiff in BH, but it appears to be more the size of the ISP Speeder.

Yeah, I hate the size relationship. They should have made fighters, and small frigates much smaller than capital ships. They should have gone with somehthing like the relative size scale that the now defunct B5 Fleet Action or B5 Wars had. The falcon should not be almost as big as a Star Destroyer.

This picture seems a little to GREY
I hope is the camera and not the miniature details.

I agree that the preview is really short, the game would be at the end of the comming month.

Although relations are odd, I'll have to agree that fighters will look a lot better like that. But I'm also concerned about how the game will look like when played - I made a general looks -preview at WotC boards, I hoped it would catch more names (and therefore should be noticed WotC people): http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=720771<

im very carefull in posting leaked pictures and spoilers at the WotC boards sometimes they ban people by just posting and reposting leaked pictures and spoilers.

i think this is because lucas arts has some restrictions on what should be discussed on their boards.

i found the picture leaked on some unofficial SWM boards too.

but i think the pictures of the related starships scales are true to its appearance. they are in relative scale and not in true scale. after all if the starfighters are in true scale with the capital ships. they could be microscopic in detail and not practical for a tabletop game.

Far be it from me to collect both SWM and D&D minis, but the ships, being a one-off don't really count, do they. That being the case I just ordered 2 starters and 4 cases. Looking forward to some fun starship battles. SWM versus my Minbari fleet, bwahaha. Now I just have to figure out how to make valid comparisons between them.

I have always been here.

I'll disagree 100% with a couple of earliar comments.
1) Personally I think these 2 models are about as big as they can be and still be playable. I don't own either of the 2 big ddm dragons, because they are just too awkward to carry.
2) Since the 2 units are in the starters & at 150 points will be used as the core of their fleet by most starting players. They need to be fairly similar or the game will get an immediate bad reputation for being unbalenced. Remember not everyone starts by buying a case (or 3), a lot of players will begin with just a starter. And need to get a simple fun game just from that. And most people regard "balenced/fair" as an essential part of "fun". At 150 points, these are half the allowed 300point squadron. So if these 2 ships had seriously different stats, there would have been a major risk that whichever one was "stronger" could have imbalenced the entire game.

On the Game-Tactics side. I have a couple of thoughts on the spinal mount guns on these 2 ships.
With a speed of 1 they arn't going to get many shots with this limited firing arc. So I see 2 actual uses for these weapons;
(a) At the start of the game deploy with a class-1 or 2 enemy ship in it's Line of Fire (obviously you have to deploy 2nd to do this) And don't deploy anything in the LoF of the opponents big ship. (Unless you want a nose-2-nose gun dual starting turn-1.
(b) Class-1 or 2 ships cannot cross this line of Fire without giving you a free shot. Class-3 ships can cross it, but only by positioning perfectly & crossing at full speed, so a tractor beam or enemy ships in the wrong square could easily block them. So tactically this spinal weapon acts as a form of terrain (So deep space does have terrain, it's called a super-star destroyer. )

Don't worry about the current metagame. It doesn't matter if it's ugly, bad, or the best ever. In 2 years time, set rotation will ban everything.

WotC doesn't do Star Wars Pre-views more than a month a way on a large scale, with this comming out (last i checked) the day after thanksgiving here in the US, this is actually right on time since it's relase is roughly 1 month away.

Lucas Film not Arts yes does put a lot of restraints on what WotC can and can't show, i wrote some stuff for the RPG, and i Lucas is VERY controling on their end.

All i know is i am still reading over the rule from here

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=starwars/article/SBrulebook

and am wondering if these will be closer to the new way things are done in the RPG (space combat has Always been crap in that game partly becuase back when it first came out they were going to release a seperate game but it got pulled and the system they put in was a makshift rushed product that was slapped on at the end) So far i like the rules but need more stats to know.

Agents of Gaming's Babylon 5 fleet action was not it actual scale but relative scale. They still managed to put out small but good looking fighters. One base would hold a whole squad. I think moongoose kept the same fighter scale for their B5 game. Giant fighters in a capital ship doesn't make sense. If you want a star fighter game go with Silent Death and use the micromachine minis. I seriously don't that WotC could come up with a better game for starfighter combat than Silent Death.
