Ryan Dancey comment on 4th edition not being a part of the SRD:

With so much of the 30+ year legacy D&D game in the SRD, I believe it is impossible to ever make a game that would be accepted by the fans as "D&D" without it being possible to alter whatever is necessary to make the Open Game version of D&D compatible with whatever product is being currently sold as "D&D" by WotC. A game divergent enough to break that legacy with the SRD is simply not going to be tolerable to anyone vested in the D&D player network. Such a radical break would almost certainly result in a 3rd party version of the game, published under a new brand name, becoming the de-facto inheritor of the D&D player network externality, coming into direct competition with whatever faux "D&D" product is being marketed, and probably crushing it.

Hmmm I'm basically gonna say this will have negative impacts on my purchasing it. Unless its in 5-10 years. Mainly I bought so many books for 3.5 I love the system and seen very little reason to change it. Its about to become like shadowrun 4th edition... Very hated IMHO

If WotC was smart, they would quit calling it by a version number and every time they put out a new rule set, it would incorporate the FAQ updates and rule revisions (like the special edition books).

So they could have (for example) a PHB which would be current as of such and such a date, and continue doing it like that forever... This would not alienate players like a new version and would only serve to increase their sales base for the game as a whole. If they do release a new version, they will fragment their followers. They have spent so much time and money developing a loyal group of buyers for 3.x, it seems counter-productive to run the risk of losing a large percentage of them.

Again, they need to stick to the system at hand and re-release the cores every so often with current updates, not create a whole new version of the game.

I agree with dj-chuckles, with all the money I poured into 3.5 I don't really want to move onto a new system and basically put 3.5 back onto the shelf to gather dust.

It all depends upon the quality of the new edition.

If the new edition is a substantial improvement over 3.5, then I'll be happy to begin reinvesting in the product to get the new edition.  It isn't like it would be impossible for a new rule set to be worth a few hundred dollars.  I plan to play a few thousand hours in the next 8-10 years.  If the new rule set improvements are substantial, they'd easily be worth $1 per hour of game time played.  In other words, it'd easily be worth a few thousand dollars over a fwe years to buy all the new products.

This whole discussion, at this point, is kind of ridiculous.  Seriously.  We're talking about whether it makes sense to make a new edition, when we don't even know what the new changes would be that go into that new edition.

Is 3.5 perfect? No.
Is there massive room for improvement?  Yes.Â
Is is possible for WotC to make enough of those improvements in a new version of the game that it'd be worthwhile to do another entire investment cycle?  Sure.

Accordingly, I'll wait until we see some information on the new edition before I count it out.  Personally, I'm eagerly waiting to hear mroe about it.  If I don't like what I hear, I'll probably continue running with 3.5.  If I do like what I hear, 4.0 will become my new standard.
