| With all the push/pull/slide effects in 4E, how would you handle it if you were planning a battle where it was likely that players could be pushed into a river of lava fairly easily under the new 4E rules?

Under 3.5, they had a balance check to grab the ledge if they were pushed over.

| | I believe if they would be forced into the pit, they get a saving throw. Success would mean they fall prone in the square right before it. (I'm about 70% sure--don't have my book on me right now). | | | |

| Loquacious1 is correct. If a push, pull, or slide effect would force a creature/character over a precipice or into a pit they immediately (reaction) make a saving throw.
Less than 10: Failure = fall into pit or off ledge. 10+: End up prone in the last square you occupied before the edge.

| | I believe you get that first saving throw to see if you fall off the ledge, and then another saving throw to see if you catch yourself on the wall while falling. So that would be about 80% chance to live. | | | |

So that would be about 80% chance to live. You believe incorrectly. See the PHB reference. There is only 1 saving throw (since the effect already pushed/pulled/slid you off the edge).

| Just be aware that if you have monsters with push powers, you ARE going to have characters going over the edge. And you invariably will have monsters that are supposed to be tough getting knocked over the edge on the first shot.
So don't put in utterly lethal falls unless that's what you really want to happen!

| | Not a fan of all the push-pull-slide nonsense in 4e. Battlefield seems like a lame pinball machine. Rules seem pretty weak and poorly thought out. | | 270+ Trades Completed (194 maxminis | 50 wizards | 29 hordelings) References: http://www.maxminis.com/Forums/tabid/104/view/topic/forumid/53/postid/435268/Default.aspx H/W List: http://www.maxminis.com/hwlist.asp?user=gausse Bad Trades: Chaotic Good (Strongbow Lone Eagle), dndonuts, Allard, ScottWallace Email: gausse2@yahoo.com
