Astrophysicist, specifically researching extra-solar planets.... and no, Pluto is *not* a planet. :-)

Yes it is and nothing anyone says will make me think otherwise

After spending 9 years at Wal-Mart, 8 being management, I was treated very poorly by the company while recovering from a total hip replacement and after fighting them through the ADA to even get a job back, I eventually opted for a lucrative career slinging pr0n. Believe it or not, I get paid better and have better, cheaper benefits sitting behind a desk reading D&D modules and occasionally helping someone or checking them out.

Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say "Ni" at will to old ladies.

I agree too, Go Pluto!!

My day job btw is working as a code monkey (web design, not progrmming unfortunately), but I've got a cool boss and a nice work atmosphere so I can't complain too much.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

My situation has changed a bit. My day jobs are as follows:
1) Teaching assistant at a university
2) Graduate international teaching assistant program facilitator
3) High school in-class tutor
4) Did I mention full-time graduate student?

Methinks I may be overstretching myself. Kind of like Gumby doing the splits on rollerskates.

Nope, but does offer very nice incentives to good sales...like HD tv's, BIG monetary bonuses, paid days off to play the latest FPS for Xbox 360 (and a copy of the game)...etc etc

I love teaching. It has its drawbacks and I certainly wouldn't want to teach at the high school level (tutoring in a high school is sufficiently irksome).

Just finished grading the first round of papers. Sad commentary on the quality of high school education in this state when the average freshman is incapable of constructing a cogent sentence

Are you guys generally happy with your day job

For the most part, yes. I pretty much have it made where I am. My boss generally leaves me alone and I can spend lots of time posting here and other boards.

On the other hand, I was just informed of another job that looks intriguing. The money is significantly better and I do have decent qualifications for the job. I just have to evaluate if I'm ready to move yet. My gut says no, but I have to give it more thought. Also, the job requires some project management and I'm not the most organized person so it might not be the best fit for me.
I may apply for it anyway just to see what happens.

I did. Sadly, when I graduated, the job market was piss poor. I subbed (subbing suuuuuuuucks hardcore), I worked as a teacher's assistant, I worked as a one-to-one type tutor/support person, but in the end couldn't find anything so I decided to go in a different direction.
Not disappointed with the decision at all. The general apathy of your average high school student and well as lack of support from parents would drive me crazy. I saw enough of that to turn me off.

Full time-student studying mathematics because I have to graduate before I run out of financial aid. Focus is on education so that I can homeschool my future children without having to jump through hoops with the state government. Oh, and a business minor just to 'flesh out' my resume a little. Considering going back for electrical and computer engineering with the use of the fiance's staff fee reduction after I've had a break (been in college for 6 years now and took classes while in high school, two more years to go... bleh.)

I also work about 20-30 hours a week for an on-campus IT group. I am a glorified secretary who also plays interception for our front-line help desk and schedules our volunteers and student workers. Because of this, I also have to script (initially Bourne Shell though I've started converting everything to Perl), work with databases, and design web utilities based on it. I hate programming and scripting falls into that category. I'm starting my fourth year there and reached the wage limit over a year ago, but I make my own schedule, can work from home, and if I'm getting particularly frustrated about something I can just pull out my minis and work on trades or organizing.

As a bit of a side deal, I also work as a project-management-assistant for our fearless leader with some of the stuff he has to handle in his other role as CIO for the rest of campus. Pays a little better and he's a great guy.
