| | Barias and Aust change into spare clothing from their packs, and wipe the rest of the liquid from their gear as best as they can. Luna then heals them of the damage caused by the liquid (Aust lost quite a bit of skin on his face). Leaving the “keg room,” they try the doorway at the end of the hall after Aust has checked it for traps. The door opens into a large chamber decorated with crudely drawn symbols in a bright green paint on the walls. In the center of the room, a low, rickety table covered by rotten cloth with more of the crude smbols painted on it seems to serve as an altar of sorts. The remains of a large bonfire sit behind it, and across from it on the southern wall, there is a large metal cage with a gaping hole torn in it. On the floor next to the table lies a mat covered by animal skins. The sound of whimpering is plainly audible from beneath the skins. | |

| Sir Ronick and Barias draw their swords and cautiously approach the pallet. As they get near, the whimpering ceases. Using his sword to lift the skin, Barias is startled as a small reptilian humanoid shrieks, and burrows back into the skins, setting up a piteous wailing. “No hurt Meepo! Meepo no threat to strong humans! Lost dragon, now lose life…yeeeahhhhgraaieee…” “Wait, little one, we don’t want to harm you,” Luna croons, stepping forward and motioning to Aust that he should follow. “Barias, Sir Ronick, step back.” Barias moves back past Luna and Aust, but Sir Ronick lingers, hovering over the pallet with his sword raised. “Sir Ronick, I SAID STEP BACK,” Luna commands. Sir Ronick does after hesitating for several long moments, giving Luna a baleful look as he moves past her. “Come out so that we can talk to you- we promise not to hurt you,” Aust says. “You promise no hurt Meepo,” the small creature warbles from beneath the skins. “We promise,” Aust says reassuringly.

| The creature slowly emerges from the skins to stand shakily before them. It’s appearance is decidedly reptilian, with scaly skin, elongated head, and a forked tongue. Barias recognizes it immediately as a Kobold, but says nothing. “What humans do down here,” Meepo asks. “We are looking for some people who ventured into the citadel recently, little one. Have you seen any other humans down here,” Luna continues to croon. “You look for humans – did you see dragon while looking,” Meepo asks. “Dragon, what dragon” Barias blurts out, for which Luna gives him a reproving glance. Meepo becomes agitated again, wringing his paws, and responds “Meepo lose dragon! Stupid goblins hit Meepo over head and take dragon! Dragon important to tribe – give BIG MAGIC!!! Now gone, and tribe no like Meepo any more…”
“We are sorry that you lost your dragon, Meepo,” Aust says, “but have you seen any humans pass this way?”
“Meepo see no humans, but Yusdrayl will know. You make nice to Meepo, Meepo take you to Yusdrayl. Maybe help tribe find dragon. Then you see BIG MAGIC!!! You see… Yusdrayl know…” Meepo says excitedly. | |

| | As Meepo gathers his meager possessions together, the siblings and Sir Ronick hastily confer together. Luna, Aust, and for the most part, Barias, are for following Meepo to meet this Yusdrayl, and hopefully negotiating some kind of exchange for information. Sir Ronick vehemently disagrees, arguing that kobolds are not to be trusted, and that while the kobold Meepo’s intentions may seem good at the moment, that could change at any time. Luna gainsays him again, saying that the only other alternative they have is to stumble blindly around through the citadel, with little hope of avoiding its traps or evil denizens. As Sir Ronick is about to retort, Meepo finishes gathering his things, saying, “Hurry, humans! Meepo show you the way to Yusdrayl.” | |

| | Gesturing for them to follow, Meepo makes his way to a door on the other side of the room, and opens it quietly. As the party lines up to follow him, something in Sir Ronick snaps and he raises and brings his sword down upon the head of the unsuspecting Meepo, felling him instantly. Aust, who had been watching Sir Ronick carefully, tries to deflect the blow to Meepo’s head, but is unsuccessful. All is deathly quiet as the siblings stare open-mouthed in horror at what Sir Ronick has done. | |

| As the siblings continue to stare, Sir Ronick wipes the blood from his blade, saying, “He was judged and found wanting.” Aust is the first to break free of the shock of Sir Ronick’s act, quickly kneeling to examine the still form of Meepo. His skull had indeed been cloven. He pulls the body from the doorway (closing the door as he does so) and gently wraps it in a blanket from his backpack. Luna continues to stare, trembling with the effort of holding her barely controlled anger. “HOW DARE YOU MAKE THAT JUDGEMENT WITHOUT CONSULTING US FIRST,” Luna rages at Sir Ronick. “And should I consult with you before striking any blow versus our foes in the future,” Sir Ronick hotly retorts. “This situation is quite different as you well know. The kobold was no threat to us, and was in fact aiding us!”
“And you can say this with complete certainty,“ Sir Ronick quips. “We should do something to dispose of the body,” Aust interrupts. “We will return shortly,” Luna informs Sir Ronick, motioning for Barias to follow her and Aust, as they carry the body back toward the way they had come from.

| | DM's note: This was perhaps the trickiest part of the campaign, as the other players were genuinely upset at Sir Ronick's player for slaying Meepo. To all of the player's credit, they did manage to keep in character (with a little prodding) while dealing with this outcome. | |

| | The siblings carry the body of Meepo back to the water cistern room with plans to give him a burial of sorts when they have completed their quest. They discuss the actions of Sir Ronick, and whether they can trust him or not. A consensus is reached to continue with Sir Ronick in the party, but only on a conditional basis. Luna attempts to make peace with him upon the siblings return, but also to inform him of their decision. Sir Ronick accepts the words for what they are worth, and the party moves on. | |

| | Carefully opening the door that Meepo was to escort them through, the party enters a long hallway with a branch to the right, and three doors to the left and one to the right. Barias motions to the one the right, and Aust checks the door for traps. Finding none, he tries to open it, and finds it locked. As the others huddle around and keep watch, Aust fishes a small bundle from his pack containing a wide assortment of exquisitely crafted picks and hooks. Working quickly, he is soon rewarded with a small click from the lock, and opening the door, the party cautiously enters the room. | |

| | Entering the room, they are accosted by the smells of sweat and filth, with the faint but discernable smell of death. By the dim light of Barias’ torch, they see the two small cowering forms of goblins, and a third form lying still on the filthy floor. All three are chained to thick posts set into the floor. As they make their way into the room, the goblin on the left starts to gibber in a tongue that none but Barias (having had training in the rudiments of the goblin language) can understand. Sir Ronick walks up to the still cowering goblin on the right, and draws his sword, but with a warning hiss from Luna, he stays his hand. Barias approaches the other goblin, who has begun to speak more coherently, allowing him to decipher what it is trying to say. | |

| “I says don’t kill us, palefish, urrrrrk, and we helps yous, yessss…,” the goblins gasps to Barias. It appears that the iron neck collar securing him to the post is choking him. “Lots of nasty kobolds around, would take prisoner and kill palefishes… free us and we help, urrrrrk!”
“He says that if we free him, he will help us. Looks like the kobolds took these as prisoners. As no one objects to his suggestion, Barias, enlisting the aid of Aust, uses a crowbar and a stone to try and break off one end of a knobbed pin holding the collar in place. | As the knobbed end of the pin breaks off, several things happen at once. The far door is thrown open, and crossbow bolts fly into the room. Barias and Aust rush for the door, and Sir Ronick stabs the other goblin (dying with a screech) and moves to support them, as does Luna. Momentarily forgotten, the freed goblin makes a run for the other door, cackling loudly as he makes his escape.
Through a hazy red light, Barias can see large columns with carvings of dragons upon them. The carvings of the dragons are glowing, providing a dim red light to the room. Hiding behind the columns, Barias catches glimpses of kobolds as they fire their crossbows at him. | |

| As Barias and Sir Ronick rush into the hall to engage the kobolds, they hear a voice from the far end of the hall hissing, “Who dares to intrude upon the Hall of Dragons?” Not having time to spare an answer, the party continues their assault upon their smaller adversaries, who quickly crumble under their superior strength and ferocity brought from desperation. Luna hangs back, seeking cover from the kobold’s bolts behind the large columns, while Aust shields her. Luna is the first to become aware of it, but soon they all hear a rhythmic chanting coming from the end of the hall where the voice came from before. The dragon carvings on the columns respond to the chanting, pulsing with luminescence to its cadence.

| | The kobolds become bolder with the chanting, fighting with an accuracy and fervor that moments ago seemed impossible. The tide quickly turns in the kobold’s favor, with the party sustaining more grievous wounds than before. Aust is brought down by a crossbow bolt to the eye. Luna slays the kobold that shot it, and returns to Aust to withdraw the bolt while Aust screams in agony. Exhaustion preventing Luna from the proper focus to work work her healing powers, there is little she can do but cradle Aust in her arms and cry. “THE APPLE- TRY THE MAGIC APPLE,” Aust pleads through clenched teeth, pulling at a pouch on his belt. | |

| Luna pulls the apple quarter from the pouch, and quickly feeds it to Aust. As he bites into the fruit, Aust feels all care and worry drain from him amidst the swirling chaos of his surroundings. The pain immediately leaves his eye, and is replaced by a growing warmth, which eventually gets quite hot in the location of the wound. Luna is gratified to see the damaged tissues forced out of the wound to be replaced by new, healthy growth. In a matter of seconds, the eye is whole again, and Aust breathes a profound sigh of relief.
Meanwhile, the battle has went badly for Barias. Sir Ronick comes to his aid, finding him leaning against a column bleeding heavily from a score of wounds. While Sir Ronick defends him, Barias eats his quarter of apple. It has the same effect, and momentarily the bolts piercing his body are pushed out of his flesh, and the rat bite, which has festered, is replaced with new, healthy muscle and skin.
Determined to end this, Barias rushes toward the chanting voice coming from the end of the hall. Moving closer, he can see in the flashing red light a shrunken kobold robed in what once must have been fine cloth, standing before a makeshift throne against an ornate, dragon carved altar. The creature, who must be the Yusdrayl that Meepo spoke of, gesticulates wildly as her chanting grows even more frenzied. Barias charges the spellcaster only to feel the floor fall away as he reaches the throne. Landing heavily in a daze at the bottom of a 10 ft. deep pit, he fights to regain consciousness before the spellcaster can strike at him.

| | Managing to clear his head, Barias looks up expecting a blow that never falls. The spellcaster still stands above the pit chanting, but there is the look of panic in her eyes, as if she is caught within the rythym of her spell. Barias is startled by something blunt poking him in the shoulder, and turns to see Sir Roncik’s blood splattered face yelling at him to take his hand. He does so, and is pulled out of the pit. He is a bit unsteady on his feet, as the effect of the strobing lights and the echoing screech of the chant begins to cause great pain in his head. A strong throbbing pressure behind his eyes begins to mount, and he looks over to Sir Ronick to see that there is blood coming from his ears. | |

| | Barias and Sir Ronick move toward the spellcaster with the intent to slay her. She struggles wildly against the motions of the spell and a look of terror is in her eyes. They both end it quickly, with Barias smashing her skull in with his flail, and Sir Ronick skewering her chest. The ensuing silence stuns them, and their eyes are blinded by the cessation of the pulsing light. Almost immediately, a steady red glow from the dragon carvings on the pillars returns, and the pressure in their heads subsides. As Luna and Aust join them, Barias tells them of the strange actions of the kobold sorcerer. “She must have gotten caught up in the power of the spell. There was strong magic cast here, and I don’t think that it was a kobold spell that did it. I think that it is probable that she stumbled upon the secret of this hall, but it was her undoing. It is apparent that strange magics are still to be found here, so we must be cautious,” Luna surmises. | |

Using bits of wood and stone, they jam the door shut to secure themselves, and set a watch throughout their rest. During Sir Ronick’s turn to watch, there is a scratching at the door, but no other disturbance hinders their rest. | |

| | After their rest, and Luna’s ministration of her healing touch, the party takes stock of their situation. They won the battle with the kobolds, but that brought them no nearer to their goal of finding the missing adventurers, and removed a potentially key source of information as to their whereabouts. Their weapons and gear had fared well in the skirmish, with no major damage having occurred, and their supply of food and water was good for 3-4 days, with conservation. All of the apple quarters were used in the battle, except for Sir Ronick’s, and he still had a couple of healing potions left, given to him from the cleric, Corkie Nackle. Judging that they were prepared enough to continue their search, Barias and Aust clear the wedged debris from the door. Sir Ronick reminds them of the scratching that he heard during his watch, and everyone exits carefully. | |

| Outside of the door, Aust notices bloody footprints. Barias lights another torch for Aust to examine them more closely. “These must belong to whatever you heard scratching at the door, Sir Ronick. They are only a few hours old, and appear to come from the direction we entered this section of the citadel from. The prints are from a small bipedal creature, but as it was shuffling along, it’s hard to tell much about it. The tracks lead away into the Hall of Dragons. Whatever it is, it is bleeding heavily, as the tracks are quite easy to follow.” Leading the way, the party follows Aust back into the Hall of Dragons.

They enter into what must have once been a large gathering hall or church, but now seems to be a communal living space of the kobolds. There are several fire pits and hides stretched on frames for curing around the room. Refuse is everywhere, and the smell of kobold is quite strong. The pits are still smoking, as if the occupants left in a hurry. | |

| | While the party searches the chamber, Barias hears a rustling near a large pile of skins. He calls Aust and Sir Ronick over to him, and they circle the area. They are surprised by what appears to be a baby kobold springing from the skins and backing against a wall, growling and snapping its teeth, shaking in terror. Aust motions the others back, and calms the creature with some dried beef from his pack (not without it having bitten his fingers first). The others continue their search, while Aust stays with the kobold and gains its trust. He succeeds in this as the small creature crawls into his pack and allows him to carry it. | |

| | The party quickly finishes their sweep of the room and move back into the Hall of Dragons. Everyone is curious about the baby kobold, who crawls out of Aust’s backpack onto his shoulder every now and then. “It appears that the rest of the tribe left in a hurry,” Luna says. “Well, it’s hard to tell, but whatever was bleeding left with them. Perhaps it was a wounded warrior who led what was left of the tribe away,” Aust muses. “But how can that be- no tracks were leading away from the battle,” Sir Ronick says crossly. “Look, there is no telling what dangers lurk within this place. Perhaps the kobold ran into the goblin that escaped. The point is, do we continue to follow these tracks,” Luna counters. “Well, if the kobolds were holding the adventurers prisoners, then they would have taken them with them,” Barias observes. | |

| | As the party continues to discuss what they should do, the baby kobold becomes bolder and crawls over Aust’s shoulder and down onto his arm. It clings there observing the other members of the party, hissing whenever it looks at Sir Ronick. It soon starts whining and then wailing, and before anyone can react, Sir Ronick skewers it with his unsheathed sword, causing it to start screeching. Luna reacts immediately by focusing on the wound (with the sword still in it) and channeling her anger into her healing powers. As Sir Ronick withdraws his sword the wound closes as he does so. Exhausted by her sudden exertions, Luna can only stare coldly at Sir Ronick, as the others react angrily to what he has attempted. The kobold just lays cradled in Aust’s arms, staring into space as if in shock. | |

| Aust picks up the trail again (this time obscured by several other tracks), but the party first investigates a door off to the side of the hall. Barias opens the door with effort; it appears that it hasn’t been used in a long while. They only see darkness beyond the few feet of the entrance that the torchlight illuminates. Barias tosses his torch inside, and they behold what appears to be a cave in. Retrieving his torch, Barias closes the door, and the party moves on.

| | The tracks lead the party to an open doorway off the far end of the Hall of Dragons. Inside it appears that the room was used for butchering and storing meat, as there is a table with rusty knives and cleavers, as well as hooks hanging from the ceiling. Meat scraps lie everywhere, as if the contents of the room were taken in a hurry. Aust feels a cold draft coming from a doorway to an adjoining room, and the party follows him into it, to behold a large, jagged, gaping hole in the wall. Bringing the torches closer, they see a natural looking cave leading down into the darkness. The tracks disappear into the cave. | |
