Well, I'm thinking it's going to be a LOT harder to qualify this year. I, for one, cannot afford to drive 1000 miles to attend a qualifier. And, I expect I'll only be attending one or two, like usual.
Eek.

I agree. Yuk.Â
It may indeed very difficult to qualify this year.Â
And other Spring activities may cut into what Qualifier I can attend.Â
Only 27 Qualifiers at 2 per means only 54 are qualified. Where do the other 100 or so come from (assuming that everyone attends)? Top 100? How will that be determined? Based on how many sanctioned 2.0 200 pt constructed games one gets in between now and when they announce the Top 100? Seems a little unfair if that is how it goes down.Â
Maybe there will be more than one Grinder at GenCon. So maybe 8 from each Grinder.Â
For such growth the last two years for the Championships, it looks like they are cutting back.Â

Dave There were two Flights (of about 72 and 73 players) at last years Championships. And of that many there were quite afew (don't know how many) that did not go to GenCon fopr the Championships that either Qualified (in Top 4 or Top 100) that did not attend due to not being able to afford to go. I would venture a guess of another 60 or so that did not attend.Â
It just seems like less Qualifiers (including none from XP this year, except for the Limited Champion), less invites for winning Qualifiers, and the same Top XXX are qualified for a total less folks qualified.Â

Yeah, that's a bummer. I, for one, was hoping for something like this:
Top four invites for tournaments up to 32 players, top eight invites for tournaments over 32 players.
I would have taken half of those (i.e. top 2 and top 4 instead of top 4 and top 8), but, alas, it will not be so.

 | | 03/30/2008 7:21 AM | Alert | Hey guys, i totally agree with any sentiment that this is kind of bogus.
I mean, There was a Qualifier in Milford MA every year till now. i mean, if that one doesn't go on i don't think i'll be able to drive from Maine to New York for a qualifier.
I'll have to bite my fingernails over wether my rating can get me into nationals, or wether i'm going to have to grind it out at Gencon to get in. seems a little unfair to me, but hey i don't get to make the rules.
Anyway i'm going to a DoD re-release. i'll toss up a tourney report when i get back | | | |

Constructed is just the opposite of limited (sealed). technically, in the future, this will probably be the standard championship, but as of right now, both types have the same pool of minis.

So.. I'd rather attempt to win this than a MTG PTQ. :)
Also most gaming stores are small and cant fit big tournaments. So.. that is a reason. And no one wants to rent venues at convention centers and what not. | | if it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck, and sounds like a cow, it must be moomoochicken. ---Posted By Teflon Jeff

Now I really wish I could have afforded to go last year when I qualified. Kyle,
I was thinking last night how pretty much almost everyone who qualifies in a qualifier this year will be in the top 100 since everyone's Standard DCI rating starts from scratch when the Format debuts April 15th (the qualifiers last weekend will still count.) Since qualifiers have a higher K-value, (more points on the line each win,) I think that most of the 3rd and 4th place finishers at each qualifier will have a good chance at being in the top 100 still by the time Gen Con roles around. So by going to one or two qualifiers and by winning more games than you lose, I think being in the top 100 shouldn't be hard to pull off.
