Two invitations per qualifier. Yuck.

No matter the number of attendees. Double yuck.

Well, I'm thinking it's going to be a LOT harder to qualify this year. I, for one, cannot afford to drive 1000 miles to attend a qualifier. And, I expect I'll only be attending one or two, like usual.

Eek.

I agree.  Yuk.Â

It may indeed very difficult to qualify this year.Â

And other Spring activities may cut into what Qualifier I can attend.Â

Only 27 Qualifiers at 2 per means only 54 are qualified.  Where do the other 100 or so come from (assuming that everyone attends)?  Top 100?  How will that be determined?  Based on how many sanctioned 2.0 200 pt constructed games one gets in between now and when they announce the Top 100?  Seems a little unfair if that is how it goes down.Â

Maybe there will be more than one Grinder at GenCon.  So maybe 8 from each Grinder.Â

For such growth the last two years for the Championships, it looks like they are cutting back.Â

***nevermind I just realized that was all linked straight from wizards...odd***

That doesn't look like the full qualifier list, I could have sworn that there was one in Chicago on the list our local store had. I didn't think that ours was the only Illinois one. I'll have to check again.

I don't know that they're cutting back on invitations Sirohk. If 54 get invited by placing 1st or 2nd and another 100 are invited by being in the top 100, that's a lot of invitations. Last year, they had over 100 players at GenCon, but they didn't have 150.

There were two Flights (of about 72 and 73 players) at last years Championships.  And of that many there were quite afew (don't know how many) that did not go to GenCon fopr the Championships that either Qualified (in Top 4 or Top 100) that did not attend due to not being able to afford to go.  I would venture a guess of another 60 or so that did not attend.Â

It just seems like less Qualifiers (including none from XP this year, except for the Limited Champion), less invites for winning Qualifiers, and the same Top XXX are qualified for a total less folks qualified.Â

Ah. I knew it was high, but didn't know it was so close to 150.

Yeah, that's a bummer. I, for one, was hoping for something like this:

Top four invites for tournaments up to 32 players, top eight invites for tournaments over 32 players.

I would have taken half of those (i.e. top 2 and top 4 instead of top 4 and top 8), but, alas, it will not be so.

Hey guys, i totally agree with any sentiment that this is kind of bogus.

I mean, There was a Qualifier in Milford MA every year till now. i mean, if that one doesn't go on i don't think i'll be able to drive from Maine to New York for a qualifier.

I'll have to bite my fingernails over wether my rating can get me into nationals, or wether i'm going to have to grind it out at Gencon to get in. seems a little unfair to me, but hey i don't get to make the rules.

Anyway i'm going to a DoD re-release. i'll toss up a tourney report when i get back

It is not listed on the AotC Qualifiers listing, but I believe the there will be a Qualifier in Milford MA this year per Pat Lynch:Â

Yes, TJ Collectibles, in Milford MA, has its normal qualifier on 5/17, beginning at 11am. I think I even will be playing. See you there!

Constructed is just the opposite of limited (sealed). technically, in the future, this will probably be the standard championship, but as of right now, both types have the same pool of minis.

Is there any good reasoning why Wizards changed from top 50 to top 100, and cut back on qualifying positions? It seems like it makes it less fair for the good players out there that want to qualify but dont have the chance to make it to tournaments enough to be ranked. This has become a real bummer for me. Now im gonna have to go to Toronto, Ypsilanti, and probably Bloomington IL. Let me tell ya, thats hard on a poor college student.

It's a push to suport more active players and stores, instead of having players come in and snipe. with cash prizes now, it's a good idea to pretect your investment from interlopers.

Its an understandable point, but many of the top players have very few games compared to the lower ranked people. As long as your always winning you could only have a third of the events that someone in the 500th ranked place would have and be much higher.

Cutting it to top 2 really shafts people in my situation who can't boost their DCI score in a local scene.
I was somewhat considering attempting to qualify this year, but I'm not driving 4+ hours if it's only 1-2 getting the nod.

Uh... i have no problem with only 2 people getting qualified. I play Magic the Gathering and only 1 player gets Qualified in the ptqs that can get anywhere from 50-200 players varying on the format and the location.

So.. I'd rather attempt to win this than a MTG PTQ. :)

Also most gaming stores are small and cant fit big tournaments. So.. that is a reason. And no one wants to rent venues at convention centers and what not.

well there are going to be both a vintage and standard tourny in the future... But this season sux!!! And they best hope they don't lose too many players this year because of the now very unlikeliness of qualifying.

Now even the very best players in the world can get knocked out very easily by a single bad game. Bad idea wotc's, bad idea...

Now I really wish I could have afforded to go last year when I qualified.

well there are going to be both a vintage and standard tourny in the future...

Kyle,

I was thinking last night how pretty much almost everyone who qualifies in a qualifier this year will be in the top 100 since everyone's Standard DCI rating starts from scratch when the Format debuts April 15th (the qualifiers last weekend will still count.)  Since qualifiers have a higher K-value, (more points on the line each win,) I think that most of the 3rd and 4th place finishers at each qualifier will have a good chance at being in the top 100 still by the time Gen Con roles around.  So by going to one or two qualifiers and by winning more games than you lose, I think being in the top 100 shouldn't be hard to pull off.
