| Their stats are reproduced here.
First, I don't think the Human Blackguard is worth 4 more points. Second, I don't know that he'd see much play if he cost even 6 or 8 fewer points. I'd rather have the higher speed and AC than the extra 5 hit points (heck, I'd take either one); I'd rather have the higher champion rating; I'd rather have the Mercenary General's champion powers; I'd rather have the cohort. The Tyrannical Rally is nice, but, it's not nice enough to justify all the shortcomings AND the higher cost. And, on top of all that, because of the alignment restriction, there are a lot of Good (and good!) Civilization pieces that can't be combined with the Blackguard that can be combined with the General.
So, despite my previous assessment, I'm giving this piece a BIG THUMBS DOWN.
Dave
Human Blackguard 46 10 25 22 5 70 ATTACK ACTIONS Basic: Longsword: +17 vs AC; 15 Damage ABILITIES Evil • Human • Divine SPECIAL POWERS Sneak Attack 5: +5 Damage whenever this creature has combat advantage against target. Tyrannical Rally: Bloodied allies within 5 squares have +2 Attack. CHAMPION 3 [][][] • Use when an ally becomes Bloodied but is not destroyed. That ally makes an immediate Basic: attack at +10 Damage but takes 15 Damage if the attack misses. • Use when an enemy attacks an ally. That enemy has –4 AC and –4 DEF until end of its next turn.
Mercenary General 42 10 26 22 6 65 ATTACK ACTIONS Basic: Sword +17 vs AC; 15 Damage ABILITIES Unique • Human • Martial SPECIAL POWERS Cohort CHAMPION 4 [][][][] • Use at any time. Allies with cost 20 or less have +2 Speed until end of round. • Use at any time. One ally has +4 DEF until end of round. • Use at any time. Allies with the same name as this creature's cohort (including the cohort) have +4 Melee and Ranged Attack until end of round. | | Knowledge Arcana editor issues 5-9, Phoenix Lore Magazine editor, assistant editor for Rite Publishing; My Trade Thread and My Reference Thread; Winner of WBC IV, IX and XIII; Rule #0: bshugg is always right! | |

| I'm actually having some trouble comparing the two....their champion powers/abilities just paint a completely different picture, it's like comparing, I don't know, the Runecarved Eidolon to the Cleric of Sune. Both have a few things in common and cost somewhere near each other, but they don't equate perfectly well because they do different things with those, errrr, things. :starting over: I mean, the Merc General Buffs his allies while the Human Blackguard buffs a little to all bloodied allies for free and debuffs a single enemy. It's the same ball, just a different sport.
I will say that the Merc General seems a better piece if you're running a fodder-heavy warband, but I can imagine that 1st Champion power of the Blackguard pulling out some scary, scary moves/combos. And there's no question: I'd be happier having a Merc General in my collection than a Human Blackguard. | | | |

| I agree that comparing them flat out isn't entirely fair. They fill different roles.
Nevertheless...
Their costs are 4 apart, they're both champions, in the same faction, they have similar stats (level, speed, hit points, AC, DEF, attack, damage), and so it seems reasonable to compare them, even though their roles will vary somewhat.

| | It's all about the free attack. Merc general still, is really only viable in sellsword type builds where you are using his champion power/cohort effectively. Blackguard is supposed to be more in traditional hitter type builds, where they do a crapton of damage to you. | | SoCal Colluder | |

| | give the blackguard 5 hp, 5 more dmg, and champ 4 and you'd be in business. His first champ power is big and his second cracks a lot of nuts but he doesn't contribute as much as he needs to by himself. Close but no cigar I say. Still better than too many pieces in this set. | | Rock Bottom Pricing: Arcane Archer 30, Centaur Hero 67, Human Cleric of Bane 25, Gold Champion 34, Death Knight 52, Goblin Blackblade 9, Silentwolf Goblin 7, Orc Raider 10, Dwarf axefighter 9, Healer 9, Thaskor 65, Aspect of Demogorgon 71, Ogre 9, Fire Giant 79, Human Wanderer 7, Drunken Master 18, Barghest 12, Longstider Barbarian 27, Longtooth Barbarian 22, Frost Giant 76, Ravenous Vampire 42, Large Earth Elemental: priceless | |

| Too bad the attack bonus is restricted to bloodied only...
Otherwise I agree with Dave.
The serious debuff of the Blackguard would be immensely useful in epic. | | 2007 & 2008 Czech Republic Champion 2008 Czech Republic's Player of the Year

| I generally agree. Merc General for the cost is a little bit beter piece. But both pieces serve different functions in a warband.Â
As a big fan of the Human Blackguard I was hoping for as a 46 pt piece he would do at least 20 damage. His +17 ATT is nice though. And his Champ Powers are cool.Â
